Biological term for hair loss is termed Alopecia which has many different symptoms. Each of these symptoms should be treated accordingly for effective treatment of hair loss.

Pattern Alopecia

Male Androgenetic Alopecia: Male Pattern Baldness is a common type of hair loss, seen in 20%-40% men around the age of 50, the symptoms of which are hereditary.

The hormone responsible for Male Androgenetic Alopecia is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes the thinning of hair and hair follicles in a patterned format. We can measure the severity of loss with the Hamilton – Norwood scale ranging from 1 to 7 where 7 is the complete loss of hair from the vertex. Proper medication and care in the early stages could prevent the hair loss and promote regeneration of healthy hair.

Female Androgenetic Alopecia: The pattern of hair loss is completely different in the case of females. Here, the hereditary factors may play an important part. During the post-pregnancy or menopausal period,  hair fall could occur as a result of hormonal imbalance. The widening of the middle partition of the head is usually accompanied by the thinning of hair during this period. In females, the severity of hair loss is measured by the Ludwig classification which has 5 grades. The condition can be looked after with proper treatment and a consultation with the dermatologist.

Alopecia Areata : In Alopecia Areata,  bald patches are formed all over the scalp area as well as in the beard and other  parts of the body. The condition may be followed by itching and tingling. Most people with a history of allergies have these symptoms. This can be treated and can even be made reversible with medication.

Telogen Effluvium: This condition is mostly seen during the post-pregnancy period. Symptoms include abrupt hair fall in women which could appear after fevers, severe infections, lack of diet, malnutrition, thyroid disorders, surgeries or consumption of certain drugs. This condition does not follow a certain pattern and can be reversed with proper medication and diet.

Hair Thinning

Shedding and thinning of hair is a constant concern for many people. Numerous factors lead to thinning of hair. These include hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, age-related factors, crash diets, decreased protein intake,

autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal diseases and taking nutrient deficient foods. The after effects of surgery, hypotension, consumption of antidepressants, antibiotics, hormonal drugs, herbal supplements also lead to this condition.
Dandruff occurs when the scalp becomes dry and produces excessive sebum (oily scalp) which results in the development of micro-organisms in the skin which further leads to dandruff and ultimately, hair loss.
The thinning of hair results in the loss of the soft glow of hair. This makes the hair unhealthy, dull and dry. In order to prevent further damage, treat these symptoms as soon as possible.
